How to Propagate Dracaena godseffiana (Gold Dust Dracaena Propagation) in 3 Easy Ways

Gold Dust Dracaena propagation is easily done at the beginning of the growing season either from stem cuttings or by plant division.
Dracaena godseffiana also called Spotted-Leaf Dracaena, Japanese Bamboo or Gold Dust Plant is a distinctly shrubby plant with broad oval leaves unlike most Dracaena varieties. It is highly tolerant to a wide range of growing conditions but does not like to be exposed to direct sunlight.
Dracaena godseffiana is easy to propagate. We have herebelow outlined 3 easy mthods by which you can increase your Gold Dust Dracaena plants. Keep reading for more on these propagation methods.
1. Gold Dust Dracaena propagation from stem cuttings in soil
Requirements
- Hand gloves to protect your hands
- Clean, sharp pair of scissors or knife
- 6-10 inches pots
- Rooting hormone (powder)
- Well-drained, potting medium
- Clear polythene sheet or bag
- Watering can and chlorine-free water
Dracaena godseffiana propagation from stem cuttings in soil
- Take 2-3 inches long stem cuttings from a healthy Gold Dust Dracaena Plant and ensure each cutting has some leaf nodes as this is where new growth will come from.
- Dip the lower cut-end of the stem cuttings in a rooting hormone to hasten rooting.
- Select a 6 or 8 inches pot and ensure that there is adequate drainage to prevent the soil from getting soggy to avoid rotting.
- Fill the container with free-draining potting soil, moisten the soil and make a hole with a pencil or any such tool. Ensure that the hole is slightly wider than the base of the stem cutting.
- Insert about 2-3 inches of the lower cut end of stem cutting in the previously made hole and lightly firm the soil around the stem cutting while taking care not to bury it too deep.
- Water the soil thoroughly and cover the set up with clear polythene sheet (bag) to create a greenhouse effect to hasten rooting. Ensure that the leaves of the cutting do not touch the sheet or bag too much by propping it up with sticks.
- Place the set up in a well-lit, warm place. Adequate light and warmth are necessary for faster rooting.
- Maintain the soil moist until rooting occurs; rooting will occur in about 3-6 weeks.
- When you observe new growth, gradually over a period of two weeks, remove the plastic bag cover to acclimate the new plant.
- Once the new Gold Dust Dracaena plant is well established, transplant it into a pot one size larger after which you can begin routine care.
2. Gold Dust Dracaena propagation from stem cuttings in water
Requirements
- Hand gloves to protect your hands
- Clean, sharp pair of scissors or knife
- Rooting hormone (powder)
- Clear jar of water or a propagation station
- Clear polythene sheet or bag
- Well-drained, potting Mix
- Watering can and chlorine-free water
- Small pots about 8-10 inches

- Dip the lower cut-end of the stem cuttings in a rooting hormone to hasten rooting.
- Place the cuttings in the jar of chlorine-free water or in a propagation station while ensuring that the base is well submerged but keep the foliage above the water surface.
- Cover the set up with the clear polythene sheet or bag to create a greenhouse effect and to maintain warm humid conditions to hasten rooting.
- Place the set up in a warm, well-lit spot away from direct sunlight to prevent scorching. Change the water every 5-7 days to keep it fresh as well as prevent fungal growth.
- When a good amount of roots have formed on the cuttings in about 3-6 weeks, gradually remove the polythene to acclimate the new plants to ordinary growing conditions.
- Transfer the rooted cuttings into individual pots in moist, well-drained soil.
- Position the set up in a warm, well-lit place away from direct sunlight and maintain the soil moist throught out. At this point you can begin routine care.
3. Gold Dust Dracaena propagation by plant division
Requirements
- Hand gloves to protect your hands
- Clean, sharp pair of scissors or knife
- 6-10 inches pots
- Well-drained potting mix
- Clear polythene or plastic bag
- Watering can and chlorine-free water

- Water the Gold Dust Dracaena thoroughly at least 1 day before to make it easier to divide and also hasten establishment as a well hydrated plant suffers less shock and takes a shorter time to take root.
- Carefully slip the plant out of its pot and carefully divide it into sections by pulling apart the roots. Ensure each section has adequate roots to hasten establishment.
- Select a 6 or 8 inches pot and ensure that the pot has a drainage hole to prevent the soil from getting soggy as it can lead to rotting.
- Fill the pot with well-drained potting mix and make a hole in the center of the pot. Make sure that the hole is slightly wider than the root base of the section.
- Place the section in the previously made hole and lightly firm the soil around the base while taking care not to bury it too deep; maintain the section at the same soil level it was in the previous pot.
- Water the soil thoroughly and cover the set up with clear polythene sheet (bag) to create a greenhouse effect to hasten rooting. Ensure that the leaves of the cutting do not touch the sheet or bag too much by propping it up with sticks.
- Place the set up in a well-lit, warm place away from direct sunlight and maintain the soil moist at all times.
- When you observe new growth in about 4-6 weeks, gradually over a period of two weeks, remove the plastic bag cover to acclimate the new plant.
- Allow the new plant to be well established after which you can begin routine care.
