Viral Diseases Causes & Symptoms on Houseplants

The indication of viral infections on houseplants are many and varied. They include; stunted plant growth, distorted stems and pale green or yellow spots or small patches on the leaves.

Other signs of viral infections are large, white, streaks on colored flowers among others. Viral Diseases are transmitted through cross-contamination or by sap-sucking insect pests.

Common pests responsible for transmission of viral diseases are;

  • Aphids: Tiny, soft-bodied insects which are usually green but may be black, grey or orange.

  • Mealybugs: White, soft-bodied, cottony-looking insects.

  • Scale insects: Small, brown discs which are covered by an outer waxy shell.

  • Whiteflies: Tiny, white moth-like insects which occur in clusters.

Treatment for Viral Diseases on Houseplants

There is no cure for these diseases. The best option is discard the infected plant to reduce spread of the diseases to the rest of the plants.

How to Prevent Viral Diseases on Houseplants

  1. Always use sterilized soil, containers, scissors and others to minimize spread of the disease.

  2. Purchase or obtain your plants from reputable sources and always check the plants for viral diseases before taking them home.

  3. Regularly inspect your plants for the sap-sucking insect pests and carry out timely control measures.

  4. Frequently clean the leaves to discourage the pests.

  5. Keep the plant properly pruned and increase humidity to reduce the pests infestations.
